jjillylilly asked: beach on the southern shore of Long Island, NY. Was that a particularly active period for sunspots and solar flares?
I’ve not heard of anything similar since, this far north, how common/uncommon is this?
Thanks Charlie great answer and yes, I’ve heard of some northern lights sightings here but this was in the southern sky… It was over the ocean on Long Island. Wouldn’t that have to be southern lights?

BioBaron asked:
Is a major aurora or solar wind enough of a disturbance to confuse radio telescopes or the like or obscure their view over that area of the sky?
What I mean is, can telescopes that watch the electromagnetic spectrum see much detail in the clouds of ionized particles in the air, or does it appear as a blur? Most importantly, would an aurora or solar wind conceal anything above it that might make similar ion signitures, i.e. reentring meteor or unfriendly missile?

I have to do it for science and it’s due in about 10 days. I want something that costs less than ten dollars and is easy for a middle schooler to do. I want to do a cool demonstration or experiment, but I can’t find any.
I heard somewhere that you can simulate the effects of an aurora by moving a neon or UV light around with a magnet, but I can’t find a UV light and when I tried it with a neon light, nothing happened.
